The Butler County Board of MRDD offers a wide variety of transportation opportunities for individuals with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. These services are operated directly by the Board or contracted with local transportation providers. The Board operates a fleet of 43 buses that include the conventional yellow school bus as well as newer styled white transit buses. All buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts. The newer white transit buses are being phased in and have many upgrades that include air conditioning, flat floors and acoustical ceilings. There are a total of 29 yellow buses and 14 white transit buses. All drivers are licensed Close collaboration occurs between all Board Programs and transportation staff to assure reliable, safe and efficient service. Two major goals over the next few years are to reduce routes to 75 minutes and to limit the number of individuals riding in wheelchairs on a single bus to no more than five. These goals will reduce the stress of long bus rides and provide safer and quicker exiting from buses in emergencies. It is the goal of the Butler County Board of MRDD to provide air-conditioned bus service to its entire fleet. This is part of the ongoing initiative to provide air conditioning for the entire fleet. Presently, 17 of the 31 bus routes are serviced by air conditioned buses. This program is part of the ongoing effort to insure that those individuals who are the most medically fragile or who have the longest bus ride are provided with the safest and most comfortable transportation to and from their day program locations. Individualized arrangements will be made with families in those instances when therapy services are delivered at a facility for children from birth up to age three who are enrolled in Early Intervention Services.
The Butler County Board of MRDD provides round-trip bus service for adults receiving services at a Board-operated or contracted facility. This service has specific pick up and drop off times according to the work schedule of the particular facility. Some individuals work in the community or at job sites away from one of the three adult centers. The Board will assist individuals needing transportation to a job site. Staff can work with the public transportation systems in the City of Middletown in matching fixed route schedules and limited "on-demand" services to individual needs. The Board will assist individuals desiring more information on how to access this service. The Butler County Board of MRDD encourages all individuals working in the community to arrange their own transportation with friends, neighbors, or family members. The Butler County Board of MRDD can help those in need with financial assistance. The Butler County Board of MRDD also contracts with a private transportation carrier that can provide one-way or round-trip transportation to and from community employment. The Butler County Board of MRDD can provide assistance to those in need to help pay the cost of this service.
Support Coordination Services assist eligible individuals with their planning and learning needs to live and work in the community. Some individuals may choose to use public transportation services. Support Coordinators will train individuals for successful use of public or private transportation services or assist the individual in linking to other transportation resources.
The Butler County Board of MRDD has a number of vans that are used during the regular work day (Monday through Friday). These vans are available for use on weekends or evenings. The Leisure/Recreation program utilizes these vans to support leisure coach outings and other special events. Activities include dances, concerts and other social events that occur throughout the year. Anyone wishing to use a Board vehicle must be registered through the Butler County Board of MRDD offices. If the person wishing to use the vehicle is a volunteer, that person must be registered as a volunteer with the MRDD Programs. Anyone driving an agency vehicle must have a valid Ohio Driver's License and complete a review of the Van Driver's Manual requirements.
Eligible individuals that are funded through a waiver program may choose from a variety of transportation services. Waiver dollars may help to pay for the transportation. These service needs are assessed by your Support Coordinator and determined with you in your Individual Service Plan.
Eligible individuals that qualify for Medicaid services may choose to have door-to-door transportation from their home to medical appointments. This service is funded by the Butler County Department of Jobs and Family Services.
