We believe that families are the greatest single helping resource for people with developmental disabilities, and we want families to speak out for what they want and need. Families with a family-member who may have a developmental disability can contact us for help. Here are some of the kinds of support we currently offer. Taking care of a family member with a developmental disability can sometimes seem to be a difficult task. If it weren't for services provided by the Butler County MRDD Programs, many families would be forced into looking for places for their family members outside of the families' home. By providing supports we keep families together and contribute to a much happier life for an individual with a developmental disability. For information about eligibility, please click on the Getting Our Services button. The Family Resource Services Program includes finding and paying for the following:
There is a sliding fee scale that families must use to determine if they will pay a percentage of the cost for services. Families must also apply for help through their private insurance. The Arc Hamilton County operates the Family Resource Services Program for the Butler County Board of MRDD via contract.
Respite Providers When families want respite care, most families have family members or friends that will provide the respite. Sometimes families do not have any resources for the care of their son or daughter. There is a pool of certified respite providers who will assist families by coming to the family’s home or providing care in their own home. There is a person on staff who can assist families in finding certified respite providers as well as other kinds of help. She is a resource to families in the area of benefits; e.g. Medicaid Spend Down program, work incentives, assisting families in securing benefits and other kinds of general assistance from civic and other organizations.
MRDD's Family Focus helps families by providing behavior supports, counseling, skill acquisition, connection to community resources and other assistance and support. For more information on behavior supports, please click on the Behavior Supports button. The Family Focus Program offers counseling to families to help with emotional and psychiatric situations. Sometimes, family members have been diagnosed with an emotional concern or a mental illness and this can be devastating to the family group as a whole. We can assist the family in learning more about the illness (Depression, Bi Polar Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, etc.) and we can offer information about the medications that have been prescribed to treat it. We can also offer some concrete strategies to bring the family back to a functioning unit again. In addition, we offer help around issues of loss and grief. If a family member has experienced a loss and there is a need to work through this loss with themselves and/or other family members, the counselor can assist with this. We can help a family in the area of "relationships" such as improving the communication between family members. We can help a family that might be struggling with one of its members striving to be independent. We work directly with the family and, once our program has ended, the family will have concrete strategies to continue on their own. We offer skill acquisition to families. We assist family members working on safety and survival skills in the areas of Home Safety (fire and severe weather, cooking safety, use of cooking facilities), Personal Safety (emergency services, strangers), Health/Medical (poison control, first aid, prescription medications). We also assist families with toilet training issues. We help individuals on the road to becoming more independent, recognize and learn the things they will need to accomplish prior to moving out on their own.. We help connect families to community resources that they might not have known about. We have a list of Parent Groups that support parents/grandparents struggling with a variety of issues such as attention deficit disorder and Tourette syndrome. We hook families up with recreational and leisure activities and we help facilitate friendships among individuals. We also have a small, but well-stocked library with books and literature around topics such as behavior, education, families, specific disorders/syndromes etc. These resources are available to families, teachers, and the community.
Support Coordination assists individuals and families in getting the services and supports they want and need, including getting and maintaining medical benefits and financial assistance, linking with services in the community, and linking with employment services as described in the individual's Individual Service Plan (ISP). Support Coordinators develop the ISP and then ensure that the services listed in the ISP are delivered in a satisfactory way to the person using the services.
